Screen Your Home for Mold and Mycotoxins

Developed by RealTime Laboratories and offered through Respirare Labs, the EMMA Mold & Mycotoxin Test Kit is a dust-based environmental screen designed to look for selected mold species and mycotoxins from the same submitted sample. It is best used as a broad first look at whether your home shows a mold or mycotoxin signal before deciding whether targeted air, surface, or inspection-based follow-up is needed.

When the EMMA Test Kit Is Useful

EMMA is useful when you want a broad environmental screen of the home, an initial data point, or a baseline look at settled dust before deciding whether more targeted testing is needed.

  • Whole-home mold and mycotoxin screening
  • Baseline testing when you are unsure where to start
  • Environmental follow-up when medical lab results raise exposure questions
  • Deciding whether targeted air testing, surface testing, or inspection-based follow-up makes sense

What’s Included in the EMMA Test Kit

Your EMMA kit includes the materials needed to collect and return a dust sample for laboratory analysis:

  • Dust collection materials: Materials for collecting settled dust from the home
  • Step-by-step instructions: Clear guidance for collecting and returning your sample
  • Prepaid return packaging: Return materials included for sending your sample back to the lab
  • Laboratory analysis: Mold DNA and mycotoxin screening from the same submitted sample

What the EMMA Test Screens For

EMMA screens one submitted environmental sample for both selected mold targets and mycotoxins:

  • 15 mold targets using mold-specific qPCR
  • 16 mycotoxins using ELISA-based analysis
  • One combined report showing mold and mycotoxin findings from the submitted sample

Results are intended for environmental screening and should be interpreted in the context of the sample collected, the home history, and the question being asked.

How to Collect Your EMMA Sample

For the broadest baseline, collect settled dust from multiple undisturbed areas of the home. EMMA works best when there is enough settled dust to represent what has built up over time.

  • Collect from undisturbed surfaces where dust has had time to settle
  • Include commonly used areas such as bedrooms, living areas, or home offices
  • Avoid freshly cleaned or recently wiped surfaces
  • Follow the instructions included with your kit before returning the sample

When to Choose a Different Test

EMMA is best used as a broad dust screen. A different testing approach may be better when your question is more targeted.

  • Current breathing-zone exposure: If your question is “Am I breathing it right now?”, active air testing may be a better fit.
  • Specific surface or room concerns: If your concern is tied to one surface, material, or room, targeted testing may be more appropriate.
  • Post-remediation verification: If you need to evaluate conditions after remediation, use a targeted post-remediation approach.
  • Visible mold or active water damage: If you can see mold growth, staining, leaks, or moisture problems, inspection and source correction may be the first step.

What Happens After You Get Your Results

Your EMMA report provides mold and mycotoxin findings from the sample submitted. A positive result does not automatically identify the source or prove current airborne exposure, but it can help guide next steps.

  • Review whether selected mold targets or mycotoxins were detected
  • Use the report as an initial data point for environmental decision-making
  • Decide whether targeted air testing, surface testing, inspection, or professional review makes sense

Turnaround Time

Typical turnaround is 7–10 business days after the sample is received by the lab. Shipping time may add additional time before results are available.

Ready to Screen Your Home?

The EMMA Mold & Mycotoxin Test Kit gives you a broad first look at selected mold species and mycotoxins in settled dust. Start broad, then decide whether targeted air, surface, or inspection-based follow-up is needed.
