What is an ERMI Mold Test?

The ERMI mold test was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support nationwide research on indoor mold and its effects on health—especially asthma in children. To create the ERMI scale, researchers collected and analyzed dust samples from 1,096 homes across the United States as part of a large government study called the American Healthy Homes Survey (AHHS) (Vesper et al., 2007).

The goal wasn’t to diagnose mold problems in individual homes—but to develop a consistent way to compare mold levels across the country. By studying the DNA of 36 common mold species in household dust, the EPA created a scoring system (called the ERMI) to estimate how “moldy” a home was compared to others.

How ERMI Mold Testing Works

The ERMI mold test analyzes dust from your home to measure mold levels using a method called quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). This DNA-based technique identifies and quantifies the presence of 36 specific mold species—26 associated with water damage and 10 commonly found outdoors. The result is a single ERMI score, which estimates how “moldy” your home is compared to others.

How the ERMI Score Works

Once your dust sample is analyzed in the lab, the ERMI test gives you a single number called an ERMI score. This score is meant to show how your home’s mold levels compare to those in other homes across the U.S.

To calculate the score, the lab measures the DNA of 36 different mold species in your dust sample. These molds are divided into two groups:
