Abstract
Accurate assessment of inhalable airborne mycotoxins requires sampling methodologies capable of capturing particles across the inhalable size fraction while maintaining compatibility with laboratory-based analytical procedures. Standardized approaches for isolating and analyzing inhalable particulate matter remain limited within indoor environmental assessment.
This white paper evaluates the use of an IOM Multi-Fraction sampler for collecting inhalable particulate matter intended for mycotoxin analysis in indoor air. The device, developed by the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM), utilizes a 25 mm filter membrane in combination with a Multidust polyurethane foam substrate to separate and retain particulate mass across defined inhalable fractions.
Methodological considerations including sampler configuration, foam and filter integration, collection conditions, and combined laboratory extraction protocols are examined. Particular emphasis is placed on the necessity of analyzing both the filter membrane and foam substrate to ensure accurate quantification of collected mycotoxins.
The evaluation outlines the operational parameters required to maintain inhalable fraction integrity and supports the technical feasibility of using the IOM Multi-Fraction sampler as a structured approach for inhalation-relevant airborne mycotoxin collection in indoor environments.
